Fotoboeken bij De Slegte

Tijdens de 27ste Amsterdam Antiquarenbeurs op 8 april is er een uitgebreide collectie fotoboeken te bezichtigen in de stand van De Slegte. Een catalogus met alle items is af te halen in de winkel in Amsterdam en bij de stand.

De boeken zullen na de beurs verkrijgbaar zijn in het filiaal in Amsterdam.

Photojournalism contest to capture change in Asia

Professional and freelance photojournalists around the world can submit their best work for a new competition that includes cash prizes and a trip to Beijing. Entry deadline: April 30.

The first annual Asia Press Photo Contest is focusing on the theme of "Changing Asia." Submitted photos should reflect changes taking place on the continent in any field, such as culture, economics, the environment, or science and technology.

There are eight categories: general news; spot news; economics, science and technology; portraits; a day in the life; sports; arts and entertainment; and nature and environment. For each category, there is a top prize of US$1,000 and roundtrip airfare to Beijing. Another 160 honorary winners (20 in each category) will have their photos included in a yearbook and an exhibition.

The Asia News Network (ANN) is organizing the contest in cooperation with the state-run China Daily newspaper, with additional support from several other Asian newspapers.

Expositie en lezing Kadir van Lohuizen in Leiden

Kadir van Lohuizen verzorgt op donderdag 15 april een lezing in het Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde.

Hij doet dit rond zijn tentoonstelling van 60 zwart/wit foto's die hij maakte over de diamantwinning in Afrika en de daaraan verbonden bedrijfstak.

Press photographer is shot to death in Venezuela

Jorge Aguirre, a photographer with El Mundo newspaper, was shot to death while covering a protest against the murder of three Canadian-Venezuelan brothers.

According to Julio Calderón, the victim's driver, their vehicle was intercepted by an unidentified man in a motorcycle who ordered them to stop.

"He said he was a police officer, but since he had no identification, I did not stop." said Calderón. He added that some minutes later, the man appeared again and fired some shots, wounding Aguirre.

The victim was taken to the Hospital Clínico Universitario, where he was promptly attended, but physicians could not safe his life.

The last photograph taken by Venezuelan photographer Jorge Aguirre of his unidentified assailant as he flees the place on his bike. Aguirre, who was covering a protest march for his employer El Mundo newspaper, was shot presumably by a police officer riding a motorcycle without identification and died shortly afterwards in hospital.

U.S. photojournalist injured in Nablus

The Israeli army completed an operation in Nablus on Wednesday, targeted at arresting fugitives from the Islamic Jihad and Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

Early Wednesday morning a man and a woman were arrested in Nablus and in the nearby town of Bil'in, respectively, under suspicion that they agreed to commit a suicide bombing against Israelis.

Later, the troops surrounded two more suspects who barricaded themselves inside a building in Nablus. A gun battle took place during that time.

A U.S. photojournalist was injured in his stomach by a rubber bullet fired by soldiers.

Nieuws van de Henri Cartier-Bresson stichting

Until Sunday April 9th, the HCB Foundation will show a selection of portraits made by Cartier-Bresson : The Inner Silence of a Willing Victim. The photographs exhibited come from the collection of the Foundation.

From April 26th to July 30th, the Foundation will show, for the first time in France, the work of the Catalan photographer Joan Colom, street photographs of the 1950’s Barcelona.

Steve McCurry kijkt naar het oosten

Op 1 mei komt er een nieuw boek uit van Steve McCurry: Looking East, South Southeast Portraits.

Het is een vervolg op het prachtige South South East uit het jaar 2000.

Steve McCurry gaat ter gelegenheid van de nieuwe publicatie op toernee door Australië en Nieuw-Zeeland.

Cameron Diaz krijgt schadevergoeding

John Rutter, de fotograaf die in 1992 naaktfoto's maakte van de toen nog niet zo bekende Cameron Diaz moet de actrice een schadevergoeding betalen. Dat heeft een Amerikaanse rechter besloten. De foto's mogen op geen enkele wijze openbaar worden gemaakt.

De man nam in 2004 contact op met Diaz en vertelde haar dat ze de foto's en nog wat videomateriaal kon kopen voor 3,3 miljoen dollar. Hij dreigde ermee naar een reclamebureau te stappen als de blondine niet met dit aanbod akkoord zou gaan. De fotograaf zit al vier jaar vast wegens valsheid in geschrifte, meineed en diefstal.

25.999 gezichten: Fatima (12) wordt uitgezet

Fatima (12) moet terug naar Angola. Fatima woont 11 jaar in Nederland en is een van de 26.000 vluchtelingengezichten. Door Fatima startte schrijfster Marion Bloem de actie Een Royaal Gebaar, waarbij Koningin Beatrix gevraagd werd om ter ere van haar ambstjubileum een generaal pardon te geven aan 26.000 vluchtelingen.

Fotografiemuseum Foam exposeert foto's over Koninginnedag in Nederland. Fatima mag daarin -als symbool voor honderden kinderen zoals zij- niet ontbreken. Fotograaf Jan-Joseph Stok portretteerde haar en overhandigt de foto met kinderrechtenorganisatie Childright aan Foam, op woensdag 5 april om 13:00 te Amsterdam.

Het portret van Fatima mag niet ontbreken in de Foam-expositie Koninginnedag in Nederland. Koningin Beatrix is ook Fatima's Koningin. Fatima wil ook dit jaar Koninginnedag vieren, in het oranje, net als altijd. Fatima is 12 jaar oud en woont al 11 jaar in Nederland. Haar moeder ontvluchtte Angola in 1995, na daar zijn te mishandeld en verkracht door politie-agenten. Fatima en haar broertje moeten nu terug naar een land dat zij niet kennen en dat armoede en allerlei andere gevaren voor hen in petto heeft.

Haar foto in de Foam-expositie illustreert dat Fatima en honderden kinderen zoals Fatima, zich meer verbonden voelen met Koningin Beatrix dan met het Staatshoofd van hun 'land van herkomst.'

De foto van Fatima wordt woensdag 5 april a.s. om 13.00 overhandigd aan Foam.

Robert Knoth exposeert in Londen

Panos Pictures and Greenpeace present an exhibition of award-winning photographs by Robert Knoth to mark the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident.

The exhibition runs at the Oxo gallery in London from 18 April to 14 May.

Chernobyl was the world's worst nuclear accident, but its legacy is sadly not unique. A new exhibition of photographs by Robert Knoth documents life in the radioactive ruins of four nuclear disaster sites in the former Soviet Union.

With many governments now advocating a new generation of nuclear power stations, these photographs offer a timely and cautionary reminder of the terrible human costs of nuclear technology - and the deadly consequences when things go wrong.

Fallout: the human cost of nuclear catastrophe is showing at the gallery@oxo, Oxo Tower Wharf, Bargehouse Street, South Bank, London from 18 April - 14 May 2006. The exhibition is open daily from 11am to 6pm. Admission is free.

Dubbel tragisch: broer Dana Stone gesneuveld in Afghanistan

Dana Stone bought his own ticket to Vietnam in 1966 and started working as a stringer for the Associated Press (AP). Stone, who had to be taught how to use a Nikon when he arrived in Saigon, ended up with his combat photos on the cover of Time magazine a year later. In 1968 Stone and his wife left Saigon for Europe, then returned to Vietnam in 1970.

Dana Stone vanished on April 6, 1970, on Route 1 in Cambodia (along with Sean Flynn, the son of the actor Errol Flynn).

Tom Stone was a junior in high school when his older brother Dana disappeared in Cambodia. Tom Stone joined the Army in 1971 shortly after he graduated from Woodstock High School, motivated at least in part by a desire to learn what had happened to his brother.

On March 29, 2006, Sgt 1st Class Tom Stone (still a soldier 35 years later), was killed in combat in Afghanistan.

Homo-foto's schudden conservatief Italië wakker

De voormalige Benetton-fotograaf Oliviero Toscani moet zich verantwoorden voor de rechter voor een reclamecampagne voor het kledingmerk Ra.Re. Op de foto's figureren homoseksuele mannen die elkaar kussen of betasten.

De rel begon nadat de Italiaanse reclamecommissie de campagne veroordeelde als een ernstige aantasting van de gevoeligheid van het publiek. De bewuste affiches, onder andere twee geklede mannen die elkaar kussen en twee mannen op een bank, waarvan er een de andere in het kruis tast, zijn voor veel Italianen niet te pruimen. Diverse oudervereniging spraken schande over "de vulgaire campagne die een slecht voorbeeld is voor de kinderen". Zo dacht ook aanklager Carlo Lasperanza erover en hij daagde de fotograaf voor de rechter.

De hetze rond de affiches is opmerkelijk. Recentelijk maakte de Italiaanse oppositieleider Romano Prodi nog bekend dat hij het burgerlijk huwelijk open wil stellen voor homoseksuelen. Prodi meende daarbij oprecht dat een flink deel van de Italianen daar klaar voor waren. Dat was echter buiten katholiek en conservatief Italië gerekend.

"Er is in Italië een hevige discussie aan de gang over homoseksualiteit, dus het was het juiste moment om dit te doen", reageert Toscani. "De campagne is niet vulgair, het zijn gewoon twee mannen die samen plezier maken."

Ra.Re is vanzelfsprekend gelukkig met de aandacht die de campagne geniet. En Toscani maakt zijn reputatie als modefotograaf weer helemaal waar.
